Cette chanson de Billie Holliday de 1939 a pour thème le lynchage des afros américains durant le 20ème siècle. Elle est composé par Abel Meeropol afin de dénoncer les Necktie Party ( pendaison) qui avait lieu dans le Sud des Etats Unis et auxquels les blancs assistaient habillés sur leur 31. Cette chanson fut offerte à Billie Holiday au cours de sa carrière. Ce "strange fruit" fait référence aux corps des lynchés, très souvent noirs, pendu aux arbres (cf photo roman engagé). Il fait aussi référence au texte "Le verger du Roi Louis" de Théodore de Banville, un poète.
